Last weekend in the cafeteria Coolidge Cougars danced their way into the long Valentine's weekend at the annual Coolidge Family Dance. This year it was hosted by the 5th grade Junior Girl Scout Troop #2101 and it was an Oscar-worthy event complete with a red carpet entrance and paparazzi! Many thanks to all of the Coolidge Girl Scout troops, parents and friends who all helped with decorating, donated refreshments, and helped with setup and cleanup. Special thanks to Mrs. Brill and her creativity. All of the decorations and set design were her creations, and they were fabulous. Comic Creators is an after-school activity where kids are getting an opportunity to create their own famous comics! While we were there, we got great pictures and interviewed some soon-to-be famous authors! First, The comic creators teachers gave the comic creators a packet that they used to write all the details of their first comic. So far, all of the comics look very interesting and fascinating! After they got the packet, it was time to start designing a comic! One awesome comic creator is going to make a comics with the main character "the evil guse," and another has a main character described as a “person.” Interesting stuff, huh? Some kids in Comic Creators thought it would be cool if some people saw their comics online. So, we asked them if we could show their comics on this site and they said would allow us to share them, including our own Mia C. The Comic Creators are going to make successful comics. It was fun to skim through the amazing comics. By Deanna E. Last week on the 9th of February, there was a 4th grade Spelling Bee here at Coolidge. There were over ten rounds of spelling! The top six spellers continued on to a Spelling Bee against the 5th graders. Sadly, four competitors were eliminated but the top six fourth graders moving on are -
By Abbey M. and Houston S. On January 20th, the 4th grade classes went on a field trip to the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. When we got there, we went to find our seats right away and the music started. In the middle of the performance, a man named “Dude” interrupted the show. He was a performer who was acting as a former surfer who wanted to be transported to the ocean. He claimed that the newspaper said that the music of the Walt Disney Concert Hall would take him to the ocean. Another performer, a kind lady named Carmen reassured Dude that the music could transport him to the ocean. Each of the instruments in the orchestra represented a part of the ocean. For example, the cello represented the thunder. In the end, Dude believed that the music could in fact transport him and take him to other places. The Coolidge students also felt that music could move them. We all had a fun time at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. By: Faye R. Please give a round of applause for our wonderful new librarian…………. Mrs.Dodd! She just recently joined Coolidge’s staff and she is terrific at her job! Before she came to Coolidge, she worked at the Pasadena Public Library! If you thought she looked familiar, maybe that is where you have seen her before! She commutes to our school from La Crescenta where she lives. Her personal favorite book is Goodnight Moon by: Margaret Brown, but her favorite book as a child was Say Hello Vanessa by: Marjorie Sharmat. When she has free time, she enjoys going to the park and going to the movies. In her opinion, her favorite part about being a librarian is interacting with the kids and helping them find books they love. The students and teachers love her and I hope now that you know more about her, that you will love her too! By Kaylee C. and Adrian T. Video by Gabriel S. Everyone knows that the El Nino is here this winter in California. You might think that lots of rain is bad, but since California is in a drought, more rain will be good for our state. But it has caused a few troubles, like no outdoor recess and Student Council meetings being postponed. There are big puddles all over campus, including a big pond-like puddle under the solar panels, which prevents the water drying up. El Nino is a rain pattern that happens every few years that was discovered by fishermen who realized there was unusually a lot of fish at a certain time over and over again. El Nino means “The Child”, because often the rain comes around Christmas time. Let’s hope this year’s El Nino will help us in this drought without causing too much problems for us. We still think it would be good if the El Nino stops soon! By Darla H. On December 4, 2015. there was a Pride & Spirit Awards Assembly outside of the Computer Lab as the trimester ended. Grades 1-5 participated in the assembly congratulating the Super Cougars and Jog-a-thon winners. After the assembly, grades 1-3 went on to class, and left the 4th and 5th grade to begin their Trimester Awards Assembly! There are many awards you can earn, such as the School Honor Roll, Principal's Honor Roll, and Most Improved in many subjects. Congratulations to all of our hard working students. By: Kaylee C. Did you know our new computer lab teacher, Mr. Tom, likes playing basketball? You probably didn’t know this about him, or anything else about him either. I got a chance to interview him and he might be a lot like you and me! Just read on to find out about our new computer lab teacher. Mr. Tom was always a computer lab teacher, but he just worked in different places. As the computer lab teacher, he helps the students and teachers and teaches them how to use computers. One thing he likes about his job is working with kids. When Mr. Tom was a kid, he actually wanted to be a mechanic, since he liked cars. One goal he has as a computer lab teacher is finding new ways to use computers in schoolwork. If Mr. Tom had to rate himself on a scale of 1-10 on how good he was with computers, he would rate himself a 7 because “There’s always more to know”. His favorite thing to do on the computer is to surf the Internet and read about things. Mr. Tom has two kids, Joshua and Amanda, who go to Jefferson. He likes playing basketball and eating hamburgers. His favorite color is blue (Sounds like you?). His birthday is on October 2nd. Tom isn’t his first name, it is his last name. His first name is Donald. In his spare time, (if he has any) Mr. Tom plays basketball, read, and takes Joshua and Amanda around. Mr. Tom is a very interesting person if you get to know him. He does much more than help people in the computer lab, and we are glad we have such a great computer lab teacher to help us with technical problems when we need it. Artwork by Jonathan L.
